Four home runs wasn’t enough. The Cardinal bullpen coughed up six runs in the 8th inning and Pittsburgh beat St. Louis 10-7. Ray Lankford hit two home runs, and Jim Edmonds and Mark McGwire each hit one. But the Bucs lit up relievers Heathcliff Slocumb and Mike Mohler for the six run eighth. Each allowed three earned runs, and Slocumb took the loss. Cardinal starter Rick Ankiel struggled a bit with his control, allowing five walks and four runs in six innings. The Cardinals committed two errors, meaning they are now 0-9 when they make an error, and 17-0 when they play flawless defense. Pat Hentgen will pitch for the Cards tonight against Kris Benson.
