A Springfield man who hired children to sell candy door-to-door has been penalized ten-thousand dollars for violating child labor laws. The candy sold for Jerome Coonis did not benefit a church or charity, which have exemptions from child labor laws for such activities. Private employers have to get state permission to use children younger than 16 in door-to-door sales, and cannot use children younger than 14.
