A former deputy sheriff in Springfield is suing the sheriff, saying he was punished for reporting wrongdoing in the drug unit of the department. The federal suit by Earl Massengale charges Sheriff John Pierpont with violating Massengale’s civil rights. No charges ever were filed in connection with operations of the drug unit.
