St. Louis is one of 16 cities in the running to receive a professional women’s soccer franchise. The Women’s United Soccer Association hopes to begin play in April 2001. The league has selected eight cities for franchises next year, and eight other cities, including St. Louis, as candidates for future expansion. The biggest hangup for St. Louis is the lack of a proper venue. 6,500-seat Hermann Stadium at Saint Louis University is a possiblity, but the league would like more seats.
