Internet tax ban questioned

April 7, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

A citizens advisory committee recommends congress forbid the charging of sales taxes on items sold through the internet. Kansas City Congresswoman Karen McCarthy says that will deny Missouri state and local governments millions of dollars they need to pay for services to consumers. But the head of the advisory commission, Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore, says McCarthy’s figures are wrong. He also says it would be impossible to collect and remit those taxes. McCarthy says Microsoft’s Bill Gates has told her it would not be that hard to develop a program that could handle the collections and payments.
