Backers of an effort to mark the lynchings of three black men on the Springfield town square have gotten caught up in some buck-passing and apparently won’t get their marker. The Springfield NAACP wants the marker on the square. The city wants to put something in a nearby park. A social group, the University Club, had put a bronze book on the square 30 years ago. The NAACP’s request that the club change the book to mention the hangings has been refused by the club, which says it gave the property and the book to the city.
