Rockhurst Players Say Coach is Abusive

March 31, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Six Rockhurst University women’s basketball players have quit the team, complaining of abuse by their head coach. According to the Kansas City Star, the six players, including five starters, say head coach Maryann Mitts repeatedly yelled at them. They say she tried to motivate through name-calling and personal attacks. Mitts defends her coaching style. Former players and two current players are supporting the coach. Rockhurst University president Father Edward Kinerk says the players complained to him in the fall, and he discussed the issue with Mitts. Kinerk says he doesn’t necessarily agree with the players, but he respects their decision to take a stand.
