The financial impact on St. Joseph of the closing of the Quaker Oats plant is estimated at 45-million dollars by the city chamber of commerce. The chamber says personal income in St. Joseph will drop by 29-million dollars and the sales of consumer goods and services will drop another 16-million. Quaker has almost 600 employees in St. Joseph. It plans to start laying off workers in July and close the plant next year after 75 years in St. Joe.
