A proposed law that would let Missourians tell telemarketers to leave them alone has advanced in the state Senate…but not until numerous efforts to create loopholes were turned aside. This is the proposed law that lets Missourians put their names on a statewide no-call list. Telemarketers who call anyway could be charged with felonies. Senator David Klarich tried repeatedly, and failed repeatedly, to exempt people selling financial services, investment advice and insurance. Democrats in the Senate turned aside Republican amendments friendly to the telemarketers. In the end, the measure advanced 29-4, with most of those who had tried to attack the bill during debate crossing over to vote for it. One more round of favorable voting sends it to the House.
