A spokesman for the Secretary of State says the horse race nature of thepresidential primaries this year might have depressed voter turnout inMissouri this week. Jim Grebing says just 22-percent of registered voters inMissouri cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary. He thinks media predictions ofbig wins by Al Gore and George Bush might have caused many voters to stayhome. Still, he says turnout was much higher for the primary than it ever wasduring the caucuses. Secretary of State Bekki Cook had predicted a turnout of 30-percentTuesday, or roughly one million voters.
