The Cards saw ugly pitching Wednesday from two guys on whom the Cardinals are depending heavily. Andy Benes, and new closer Dave Veres were each knocked around in a 12-3 loss to the Mets. Benes and Veres each allowed three runs, and gave up two homers, in two innings of work. On the offensive side, Mark McGwire and Shawon Dunston had two hits apiece, and Joe McEwing went deep. An injury note, infielder Chris Haas, who is considered the Cards’ best power prospect, had his elbow scoped. He’ll miss four to six weeks. The Cardinals are hoping to pitch Rick Ankiel today against Baltimore. He’s been held out because of tightness in his shoulder.
