Jennies volleyball knocked out of NCAA Elite Eight tournament

Facing the four-time defending national champions, the No. 6 Central Missouri Jennies fell in straight sets to Concordia-St. Paul, 14-25, 23-25, 23-25. The loss ends the 2011 for the Jennies, who finish 30-5 overall.

The Golden Bears came out strong in the opening set, taking an 8-3 lead to start the match. The Jens were never able to gain an advantage in the first set, hitting just .118.  UCM answered in the second game, holding a narrow lead at 17-14.

Unable to hold serve, the Jennies lead slipped away as the Golden Bears went on an 8-3 run to finish the set. The third set looked similar, as Central Missouri seemed to be in control after overcoming a 5-0 deficit to start the game. With the Jennies up 14-11, Concordia again took control with a five point run that gave them a 16-14 advantage. UCM was unable to make a run, as both sides traded serves to finish the set.

Senior hitter Allie Huffman led the Jennies offense with 15 kills, her 30th double-figure performance of the season, but hit only for a .222 average. Kelsey Ortwerth finished with six kills and 10 digs, while Taylor Goodness, Paula Harris, and Bradye Peniston all collected five kills apiece. Defensively, Taylor Krejci led the back row with 11 digs, and Peniston and Ortwerth each had a team-high three blocks.

Columbia College volleyball set for NAIA tournament Friday afternoon

The Columbia Cougars volleyball team went 3-0 in pool play and was rewarded with a first round bye in the opening round of the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City, IA.

No. 9 Biola (Calif.) pulled off a stunning comeback win over No. 4 Embry-Riddle (Fla.), who fell to 2-1 in pool play. Biola fought back from an 0-2 deficit, taking the final three sets and the match, 17-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 17-15. Biola’s upset of Embry-Riddle opened the door for No. 5 Columbia to grab a first-round bye in the single-elimination bracket. The Cougars went unbeaten in Pool E, concluding pool play with a 26-24, 26-28, 25-19, 25-22 victory over No. 8 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). Four Columbia players – Paula Ferreira (11), Vesna Trivunovic (11), Kelly Corkum (10) and Ola Shawky (10) – posted double-figure kill totals.

Missouri State loses to Pepperdine in NCAA volleyball

Missouri State’s volleyball team lost at 18th-ranked and 15th-seeded Pepperdine Thursday night by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-16 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Malibu, Calif.  The Bears end their season with a seventh NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003, going 22-9 for a 13th consecutive 20-win season.

Mizzou set to battle SEC foe in NCAA volleyball tournament (AUDIO)

It will be the first battle for a Missouri team against a future SEC rival on Friday when the Tigers face #17 Florida in Cedar Falls, IA. Mizzou will look to create the same magic they had last year on this floor, where two wins in Iowa helped the Tigers advance to the Sweet 16 last year.

The Tigers, a team where the roster is made up of 82% underclassmen, enter the NCAA Tournament as the youngest team in the field. Mizzou is led by Lisa Henning who is the first Tiger ever to lead the Big 12 in kills per set (4.65) and points per set (5.16) in a season. Henning was a unanimous selection to this year’s All-Big 12 First Team. Henning holds the Big 12′s top two kill performances in league play and the top four point totals. Henning is just the third Tiger to eclipse 500 kills in a season and sits just 15 shy of the school record (522).

Missouri State volleyball ready for Pepperdine (AUDIO)

The Missouri State volleyball team (22-8, 15-3 Missouri Valley Conference) earned an at-large bid into its seventh NCAA Tournament in the last nine seasons and will begin play against the No. 15 overall seed Pepperdine (22-6, 15-1 West Coast Conference) at 9:30 p.m. Central on Thursday in Malibu, Calif.

The other two teams in Malibu are California (26-6, 16-6 Pac-12) and North Carolina (23-8, 15-5 Atlantic Coast Conference). Cal and UNC play at 7 p.m. Thursday, and the first-round winners are scheduled to play at 9 p.m. Friday for the right to advance to the third and fourth rounds in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The regional is set up to be an offensive showcase, as all four teams rank in the top 27 nationally this week in terms of kills per set.  Pepperdine is 22-6 overall and won the West Coast Conference with a 15-1 record. The Bears have played one WCC team this season, losing at second-place San Diego in the second weekend of the season. The No. 15 overall seed Waves boast the WCC Coach, Player and Freshman of the Year along with four first-team all-conference picks and hit .251 as a team with averages of 14.34 kills, 1.31 aces, 15.85 digs and 2.62 blocks per set.
