St. Louis soccer icon dead at 84

Harry Keough, this state’s legendary soccer icon, who coached Saint Louis University to five NCAA championships, died Tuesday of natural causes after suffering from Alzheimer’s. He was 84.

Keough, a St. Louis native, was a member of the U.S. National Team that upset England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup. He won eight national titles as a player and took over the SLU men’s soccer program in 1967 and led the Billikens to five NCAA titles and a program-record 213 wins before retiring in 1982.

Keough played right fullback for the U.S. National Team in the 1950 World Cup, and played for every U.S. National and Olympic team from September 1949 to July 1957. He captained the United States Olympic teams in 1952 (Helsinki, Finland) and 1956 (Melbourne, Australia).

He began coaching on the college level in 1966, leading Florissant Valley Community College in St. Louis to a 12-2-2 record and a runner-up finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament.

Sporting KC’s Sapong named rookie of the year (VIDEO)

Major League Soccer announced Sporting Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong has been named the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year. Sapong finished the MLS regular season with five goals and five assists while also becoming the only player on Sporting Kansas City’s roster to feature in all 34 of the club’s regular season matches.

“Receiving this honor is very humbling, but it would never have been a possibility without the help of so many people. Our goal at Sporting KansasCity is to do everything as a team, and I am so thankful for my teammates and the coaching staff,” Sapong said. “My parents have been a huge influence in my life and have kept me level-headed, and all of my friends and family back in Virginia and at James Madison, plus all the great Sporting Kansas City fans in make winning the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year even more special.”

Jennies soccer third seed in regionals

The eighth ranked University of Central Missouri Jennies (19-1-0) learned Monday night they will be the three seed in the NCAA Division-II South Central Regional Tournament and will take on six seed Dallas Baptist University (14-5-1) Friday, November 11th in Edmond, Okla.

This marks the fifth NCAA Tournament appearance for Jennies’ soccer and the fourth time under head coach Lewis Theobald.  Central Missouri will look to avenge its sole loss of the season when it faces the Patriots Friday at a match time to be announced. The Jennies suffered a 1-0 setback to the Patriots back on September 8th. In the match, the Jennies outshot Dallas Baptist 20-6 but couldn’t find the net, falling on a Patriot free-kick in the 57th minute.

Mizzou soccer wins Big 12 tourney opener

The Missouri soccer team advanced to semifinals of the Big 12 Championship after upsetting Baylor Wednesday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas. Missouri prevailed 4-3 on penalty kicks after the contest ended tied 2-2 after 110 minutes of play. Mizzou improved to 12-7-1 overall, while the Bears fell to 14-3-3.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein saved the fifth Baylor PK then stepped up herself and converted the winning penalty to send the Tigers to the semifinals.

Mizzou will play Texas A&M , who defeated Kansas in penalties kick, in a match at 8 p.m. on Friday evening at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.

Fan who hit goalie with bobble head ID’d

Following up on the bizarre story of the Sporting KC soccer goalie who was hit by a bobble head in a recent game…the suspect’s name and mug shot have been released.

Cody J. Wente, 23, of Leavenworth, was charged Friday with aggravated battery, a felony. Bail has been set at $10,000, and he currently remains in custody in Wyandotte County.
