Chris Carpenter was named NL pitcher of the month for August. In six starts, he went 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA. In 45 innings, he walked just seven while striking out 37. He allowed just 11 runs. (Photo by Bill Greenblatt, UPI)
On this week’s edition of my Pressbox Podcast , I make the argument that Carpenter should win the NL Cy Young Award over teammate Adam Wainwright and San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum.
Carpenter named NL pitcher of the month
Missouri should have two Cy Young Winners
I thought it would be an interested topic to bring up. The Cy Young Award. There is a strong possibility that the award will go to Zack Greinke of the Royals and either Adam Wainwright or Chris Carpenter.
Greinke is 13-8 and trails many AL pitchers in wins, but he’s tops in ERA, complete games, and shutouts and second in strikeouts. All this while playing for the worse team in the American League.
Steve Walsh, one of my guests this week gives the nod to CC Sabathia. On the NL side, Brent Martin makes a strong case for Adam Wainwright and Steve goes with Tim Lincecum in San Francisco, but my vote would go towards Chris Carpenter.
I make such a compelling argument that even Steve changes his mind.
Football and baseball make for a busy August
Steve Walsh from our news dept. joins me today on my Pressbox Podcast. The Cardinals are in a pennant race and are starting to pull away in the NL Central. I think Chris Carpenter should be the Cy Young winner. Steve explains why he won’t be.
A little league team from Columbia could be playing in the Little League World Series. How cool is that.
I’ll be at the Missouri Tigers’ first scrimmage of fall practice. Are they getting screwed being picked third in the Big 12 north? Yes, but as Martha Stewart would say…"that’s a good thing." (and why am I quoting Martha Stewart?)
The Chiefs and Rams have their first preseason game. Steve says the Chiefs will get to 8 wins first. I agree, but not until 2010. He thinks I’m nuts.
Royals call up Davies
In a move I was complaining about for a couple of weeks, the Royals have finally recalled starting pitcher Kyle Davies from AAA Omaha and have designated Sidney Ponson for assignment.
Two weeks ago on my Press Box Podcast , I complained to my buddies Steve and Brent that I couldn’t understand why the Royals were continuing to start Ponson and Bruce Chen who at the time during that 10 game losing streak were a combined 1-11 while Davies was tearing up AAA hitters.
Ponson was 1-7 with a 7.36 ERA in 14 games, including nine starts. The 25 year old Davies opened the season in the rotation but was sent down on June 20 after going 3-7 with a 5.76 ERA in 14 starts. At Omaha, he was 4-2 with a 2.14 ERA in eight starts at Omaha. The Royals will stick with Chen who is 0-6 with a 5.73 ERA, but is starting to pitch better.
I’m becoming a grumpier older man
Maybe it’s because I’m turning 38 this Sunday and perhaps I’m getting grumpier as I settle into middle age. I’m grumpy and all fired up. First, I’m upset with the Chiefs organization. Second, Tony LaRussa makes me scratch my head with his managerial moves.
I do calm down enough to talk about the upcoming Missouri Tiger football season and I like the moves (who hasn’t) the Cardinals made getting Mark DeRosa and Matt Holliday.
When I heard Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel talk about recruiting and how the Tigers have filled the holes and you get a sense that Pinkel is confident that the Tigers can continue to be successful.
Watching LaRussa place relief pitcher Todd Wellemeyer in a lose-lose situation for him personally on that Thursday night, 10 inning game with LA just frustrated me his pitching decisions.
