After overcoming a number of odds the magic ran out for the 10th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats as they fell 41-16 to 7th-ranked Pittsburg State in a NCAA National Quarterfinal game Saturday at Carnie Smith Stadium.
The Bearcats incredible run ends at 11-3 and snaps their streak of seven straight national semifinal appearances. Pittsburg State improved to 11-1 on the year and advance to next week’s semifinal against Delta State.
On Saturday, two of the premier football teams in Division II will renew their rivalry as Northwest Missouri State travels to Pittsburg, KS. for a NCAA Division II National Quarterfinal matchup with Pittsburg State. The kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium.
With two come-from-behind wins, the Bearcats hope to represent Super Region Four in next week’s semi-finals and avenge a regular season loss to the Gorillas. Northwest took a 38-31 overtime win last weekend against #2 ranked Midwestern State, and Pitt State scored 24 unanswered points in its 31-22 win over Washburn.
Back on October 1st, Pitt State pulled off a win in Fall Classic X at Arrowhead Stadium, by hitting a field goal as time expired to hand the Bearcats a 38-35 loss. That loss snapped a 49 game conference win streak for Northwest.
The Bearcats also lost to Missouri Western during the regular season and beat the Griffons 35-29 in the first round of the playoffs.
The Central Missouri Mules built a double digit second half lead then withstood a late charge from Southwest Baptist to win 75-70. The Mules led by as many as 12 in the second half only to see the Bearcats trim the lead to three in the final minute.
The defending MIAA champions got a career night from center Keane Thomann and the Missouri Southern State University Lions defeated the Truman Bulldogs 89-43 in the conference opener. Thomann scored 31 points to pace the Lions while the Bulldogs were led by Seth Jackson’s 11.
A one-point halftime lead for Northwest Missouri State quickly turned into a seven-point deficit at home against Emporia State, but the undefeated Bearcats didn’t panic and came away with a 68-63 to improve to 6-0 at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, MO.
Tickets for the first ever home playoff game in Spratt Stadium pitting Division II Super Region Four’s fourth seed Missouri Western against fifth seeded Northwest Missouri State will go on sale at 9 AM Monday morning.

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats were ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Super Region Four rankings, which were released for the first time this season. Missouri Western and Central Missouri also appear in the top 10.
