Nine killed on Missouri roads over holiday weekend

About twice as many people were killed on Missouri’s roads and highways this weekend as opposed to a non-holiday weekend, according to the Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol Captain Tim Hull says nine people were killed in traffic accidents over the three-day weekend. (He says during the average nice summer weekend, the patrol investigates an average of four or five deaths.)Of the fatalities, one victim was riding a motorcycle, one was on an ATV.

Highway Patrol Captain Tim Hull says nine people died in traffic crashes over the 2009 Memorial Day weekend also.

The Patrol investigated 270 traffic crashes resulting in 133 injuries. Patrol officers arrested 157 drivers for being intoxicated.

Traffic fatalities in Missouri fell once again in 2009, a continuation of a four-year trend. Still, the head of the State Highway Patrol says they could drop even further if more drivers would take one simple step: buckle up.

Preliminary figures from last year disclose that 872 people lost their lives on Missouri roads, well below the 960 who died in 2008 and 992 who died in 2007. The number is preliminary as changes could still be made to fatal traffic wrecks from last year. Highway Patrol counts four traffic deaths during New Year’s weekend

Preliminary figures from the Missouri State Highway Patrol indicate four people were killed and 92 injured in 319 traffic crashes investigated by troopers during the New Year’s weekend counting period that began at 6 pm last Thursday and ran through 11:59 last night. In addition, the Highway Patrol made 113 arrests for driving while intoxicated.

During the New Year’s counting period a year ago, the Highway Patrol investigated 234 crashes, which included 11 fatalities and 89 injuries. There were 24 fatalities statewide over that counting period. [Read more...]

State Highway Patrol out in force this New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve brings with it a good deal of socializing. And the Missouri State Highway Patrol says far too many people who socialize on New Year’s Eve end up drinking and driving.

“Certainly there are a lot of people going out and celebrating and alcohol is a part of a lot of those celebrations,” said Highway Patrol Lieutenant John Hotz in an interview with the Missourinet. “We do encourage people, if they are going to have alcohol in their plans to celebrate, that they make their decision before they start going out to their parties about how they’re going to get home or where they’re going to stay that night.” [Read more...]
