MIAA Division II basketball recap

Central Missouri at Nebraska-Kearney

WBB – #11 UCM 68, UNK 63
#11 Central Missouri outscored Nebraska-Kearney 10-2 on fast breaks as they picked up a victory on the road. UCM held UNK to .333 shooting as they picked up their eighth straight win.

For the Jennies Nicole Caddell had a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds. Keuna Flax finished with 21 points and eight rebounds on the evening. For the Lopers Sarah Hix scored 17 points and added eight rebounds. Laramey Lewis scored 15 points and finished with five rebounds.

MBB – UCM 78, UNK 64
Central Missouri expanded a ten-point halftime lead as they picked up their fifth straight victory at Nebraska-Kearney. With the win and the Northwest Missouri and Washburn loss UCM now sits atop the league standings.

For the Mules Charles Hammork had 15 points and nine rebounds while Dominique Long and Widgett Washington each had 13 points. Reggie Stallings and Ryan Magdiarz each finished with 12 points in the game. For the Lopers Tyler Sheilds had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Pierre Newton finished with 16 points and Mike Dentlinger had 15 on the night.

Lindenwood at Missouri Western

WBB – MWSU 65, LWU 59
Missouri Western scored 17 second chance points as they held off Lindenwood to win their third straight game. LWU outshot MWSU but the Griffons pulled down 49 rebounds to just 34 by the Lions.

For the Griffons Heather Howard had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Lanicia Lawrence and Sharneice Lewis each added 13 points on the evening. For the Lions Sarah Schnieders scored 16 points with five rebounds and Marissa Lehnig scored 15 points with five rebounds. Caroline Bourlious had 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

MBB – LWU 78, MWSU 69
Lindenwood shot .550 from the field on the road at Missouri Western to pick up the victory. Lindenwood shot .420 from the three-point line and got 24 of 32 free throws to move to 3-3 in the league.

For the Lions Alex Bazzell had 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Richie Thompson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. For the Griffons Cedrique Clinkscales had 12 points and added six rebounds. Reed Mills and Kalvin Balque had 11 points on the night.

Missouri S & T debuts in D-II top 25 football rankings

With eight of the bottom 15 teams in last week’s AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll losing this past weekend, it opened the door for four new teams to enter the poll this week.  Missouri S&T is making its first ever appearance in the poll. The Miners are 9-1, with their only loss coming from their conference rival, No. 19 Indianapolis.

Colorado State-Pueblo still sits at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week after its 31-17 victory over New Mexico Highlands moved their record to 10-0. No. 2 Winston-Salem State (N.C.) is also 10-0 after beating Fayetteville State (N.C.), 41-8. New Haven (Conn.) remains in the No. 3 spot and will face American International (Mass.) for a second consecutive week for the Northeast 10 Conference title. No. 4 Northwest Missouri State received one first-place vote this week as it prepares to face No. 11 Missouri Western State for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title.

Division II football recap

Saturday Games

Pittsburg State 20, Truman State 6

Pittsburg State held the Bulldogs to just 216 yards and racked up 449 yards of their own on the way to 20-6 victory. PSU forced three turnovers as they used a 14 point second quarter to hold off TSU.

For the Gorillas Briceton Wilson ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns while Jason Spradling added 113 yards rushing. Anthony Abenoja passed for 67 yards and rushed for 54 from his quarterback spot. On defense Nate Dreiling had eight tackles and one sack. For Truman Conrad Schottel was 9 of 19 for 123 yards and Dallas Grier caught six passes for 89 yards. Derek Koon hit field goals of 44 and 46 yards to give the Bulldogs their only points. Richie Shumacher had 20 tackles and forced and recovered a Gorilla fumble.

Northwest Missouri 56, Washburn 6

Northwest Missouri picked off six Ichabod passes as they rolled to 56-6 victory on the road. NWMSU held WU to just 246 yards of total offense and racked up 406 yards of their own.

For the Bearcats Trevor Adams was 19 of 26 for 216 yards and three touchdowns as he hit Tyler Shaw for 67 yards and two scores. James Franklin carried the ball 14 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. On defense six different NWMSU players picked off a pass. For the Ichabods Mitch Buhler was 10 of 24 for 148 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Hart caught two passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Atagi had 14 tackles and Jahmil Taylor added 10 stops.

Mules basketball picked 2nd in preseason men’s basketball poll

At the end of the 2011-12 season three teams shared the top spot in the MIAA regular season, and those three teams find themselves at the top of this year’s preseason poll.

Washburn, who won last season’s conference tournament, has been picked by both the media and coaches to finish first again this year. The Ichabods represented the MIAA in the NCAA Tournament along with Northwest Missouri and Missouri Southern. Central Missouri, who finished tied for the conference regular season crown, has been picked second in both polls picking up three first place votes from the coaches. Northwest Missouri, who also took home a piece of the regular season crown, has been picked to finish third this season in both polls, picking up a first place vote from the coaches.

Division II football recap

Emporia State 37, Lincoln 26
Emporia State set an MIAA record with seven field goals from three different kickers as they moved to 5-0 with a 37-26 over Lincoln. ESU kicker Eli Kuhns tied an ESU record by hitting four field goals.

For the Hornets Tyler Eckenrode was 22 of 36 for 197 yards while Derwin Hall ran for 60  yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Sanders led the team with nine tackles and an interception. For the Blue Tigers Lewis Larson threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns and Morris Henderson scored two TD’s on the ground. O’Hara Fluellen led the team with 13 tackles and three pass breakups.

Fort Hays State 37, Truman 23
Fort Hays State scored 16 points in the in the fourth quarter as they earned their first win of the season 37-23 on the road at Truman. FHSU never trailed in the game as they finished with a season high 541 yards of total offense.

For FHSU Tarean Austin rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns as well as throwing for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Layton Hickel led the teams with 15 tackles and had one for a loss. For the Bulldogs Conrad Schottel was 34 of 59 for 384 yards and two touchdowns as Dallas Grier caught 10 passes for 127 yards and a TD. Richie Schumacher and Michael Elliot each had nine tackles to lead the defense.
