Central Missouri upsets ranked Ft. Hays State…again

The Central Missouri Mules turned in their most complete performance of the season and routed eighth-ranked Fort Hays State 78-40 on Wednesday night at the UCM Multipurpose Building. The win was UCM’s first over a top-10 opponent since a win at No. 10 Fort Hays State on February 13, 2010. The win was UCM’s first over a ranked opponent since beating Fort Hays State when they were ranked No. 12, 75-68 last February.

The 40 points given up is the lowest point total by an MIAA opponent in the Kim Anderson era and the lowest since giving up 37 points to Lincoln in the 1983-84 season.

The Mules are back in action next Wednesday, January 11 hosting Northwest Missouri State at 7:30 p.m.

Jennies volleyball knocked out of NCAA Elite Eight tournament

Facing the four-time defending national champions, the No. 6 Central Missouri Jennies fell in straight sets to Concordia-St. Paul, 14-25, 23-25, 23-25. The loss ends the 2011 for the Jennies, who finish 30-5 overall.

The Golden Bears came out strong in the opening set, taking an 8-3 lead to start the match. The Jens were never able to gain an advantage in the first set, hitting just .118.  UCM answered in the second game, holding a narrow lead at 17-14.

Unable to hold serve, the Jennies lead slipped away as the Golden Bears went on an 8-3 run to finish the set. The third set looked similar, as Central Missouri seemed to be in control after overcoming a 5-0 deficit to start the game. With the Jennies up 14-11, Concordia again took control with a five point run that gave them a 16-14 advantage. UCM was unable to make a run, as both sides traded serves to finish the set.

Senior hitter Allie Huffman led the Jennies offense with 15 kills, her 30th double-figure performance of the season, but hit only for a .222 average. Kelsey Ortwerth finished with six kills and 10 digs, while Taylor Goodness, Paula Harris, and Bradye Peniston all collected five kills apiece. Defensively, Taylor Krejci led the back row with 11 digs, and Peniston and Ortwerth each had a team-high three blocks.

The defending MIAA champions got a career night from center Keane Thomann and the Missouri Southern State University Lions defeated the Truman Bulldogs 89-43 in the conference opener. Thomann scored 31 points to pace the Lions while the Bulldogs were led by Seth Jackson’s 11.

A one-point halftime lead for Northwest Missouri State quickly turned into a seven-point deficit at home against Emporia State, but the undefeated Bearcats didn’t panic and came away with a 68-63 to improve to 6-0 at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, MO.
