Big 12 invites WVU, SEC acknowledges web mistake

West Virginia, will leave the Big East conference after being formally invited Friday to join the Big 12. Big East spokesman John Paquette confirmed that the conference has been notified of West Virginia’s intentions to leave. The Big 12, meanwhile, plans to remain at 10 schools and is waiting on the departure of Missouri, which has yet to receive a formal invitation to join the Southeastern Conference.

However, SEC officials said Friday that the league’s web vendor mistakenly published a news release Thursday night announcing Missouri as the conference’s newest member. Missouri officials are currently deciding whether to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. The news release, published on the SEC’s website for a few minutes Thursday night, Missouri apparently already has made up its mind. The news story on the SEC site had a release date of Oct. 31.

Nothing new on Mizzou’s move out of the Big 12

Following a two day Board of Curators meeting that wrapped up late Friday morning, there was no new announcement from the University of Missouri that they are leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. However, the board unanimously gave Chancellor Brady Deaton the authority to leave.

“We will be making a decision about pursuing an application to another conference, if we deem that in the best interests of the university,” said Deaton, who was joined by interim University of Missouri president Steve Owens and MU athletic director Mike Alden at the press briefing.

New York Times reports Mizzou’s move to SEC “inevitable and imminent”

In the latest Mizzou to the SEC rumors, a New York Times report says that votes are there and an invite from the powerhouse football conference is closer to being a sure thing.

The newspaper cited an official familiar with Missouri’s decisions involving conference realignment who said the school is confident there will be enough votes among SEC presidents for Mizzou to become a member. However, Mizzou would still need a formal invitation.

Missouri Curators met earlier this month and approved authority for Chancellor Brady Deaton to explore conference realignment. The Board meets this Thursday and Friday again in Kansas City.

The Big 12 has given no hard deadline for Missouri to decide, but does want an answer by the end of the academic year so they the rest of the conference can decide whether to stay at 10 schools or expand back to 12. TCU recently accepted an invite

As expected, TCU voted unanimously to join  the Big 12.  Currently the conference is back up to ten, with Missouri, however we know that can all change if they receive an invite from the SEC.

Big 12 approves revenue sharing; MU Curators meet today

The Big 12 Board of Directors voted over the weekend that The football and men’s basketball revenue from Tier I and Tier II contracts will be shared and will take effect once each of the nine schools commit to a grant of rights for at least six years. Now the Big 12 will be watching the Missouri Board of Curators who meet today in St. Louis.

The board is expected to vote on 1) shared revenue in the Big 12 and the grant of rights. Or there are still some who believe the Curators will vote on 2) to give Chancellor Brady Deaton the authority to cut a deal to move to the SEC.

Let me explain what the technical terms mean, starting with Tier I and Tier II contracts. Tier I games are basically nationally televised games that air on the big four networks, CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox. Tier II games are all football games that air on cable and ESPN or Big 12 network basketball games are also considered Tier II.

The “grant of rights” term that was voted on for six years, basically means that any school that leaves early would forfeit the TV revenue it accumulates during that period.
