Mizzou/SEC Baseball Tournament Preview (Google Hangout)

Mizzou, picked to finish last in the SEC in preseason poll by the league’s coaches, has qualified for the SEC Tournament as the No. 12 overall seed in its first year as a member of the conference. The Tigers put together a 10-20 mark in SEC play and actually have more SEC wins (10) than non-conference wins (eight) this season.

As the Mizzou baseball team prepares for its SEC Tournament first round matchup with fifth-seeded Mississippi State, Mizzou head coach Tim Jamieson took time to meet with reporters on Monday. Mississippi State head coach John Cohen also met with reporters to talk about the first-round matchup and the history between the two coaches – Cohen was a former assistant at Mizzou under Jamieson and former head coach Gene McArtor.

Kevin McCrarey of South Carolina Radio Network talks about Mizzou’s first round opponent, plus gives us insight on the Gamecocks should the Tigers beat the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

Cardinals get the best of Lohse once again

A four-run fourth inning and some timely pitching was all the Cardinals needed as they beat their former teammate, Kyle Lohse, for the third straight time with a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

“Baseball is a stupid game…baseball is weird, man. You make some good pitches and they get some good hits.”

John Gast (2-0) won his second straight start and Seth Maness escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh. It was an odd outing for Maness. He allowed no runs and five hits in 1.2 innings. He’s just the ninth pitcher since 1916 to allow five hits and not give up a run, while retiring five batter.

The win was 14th in 17 games for the Cards, who took two of three from Milwaukee and lead the season series 8-2.

Royals swept by A’s

Yeonis Cespedes hit a leadoff homer in the eighth inning and the A’s beat the Royals 4-3 to move back over .500. It was the third straight, one-run loss by the Royals in Oakland this weekend.

Derek Norris hit a leadoff single and raced to third when the ball skipped over David Lough’s glove and rolled to the wall. One batter later Coco Crisp’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 3-3 in the 7th. It’s those little plays that come back to haunt.

Alex Gordon matched his career high of four hits for Kansas City. The Royals have lost 10 of 13 and fallen back to .500.  Gordon hit an RBI single in the third, scored in the fifth and doubled in the seventh. Since moving to the third spot in the lineup on May 9, Gordon is batting .450 (18 for 40).

The Royals, who scored just two runs and stranded 11 baserunners in the first two games of this series, went up 2-0 when Chris Getz singled in Hosmer in the fourth. Hosmer added an RBI double in the fifth.

Royals and Cardinals lose Saturday night

A’s starter Tommy Milone threw more than 50 pitches before recording the first out of the second inning, but he overcame his rough start to outduel Royals starter Ervin Santana as the A’s scored twice in the sixth inning to beat the Royals 2-1 on Saturday night.

The Royals loaded the bases with no outs in the second but Milone got out of it without allowing a run. Elliot Johnson fouled out to first baseman Brandon Moss near the Kansas City dugout before Milone struck out Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar.

Rarely used Jeff Bianchi drove in two runs with a 10th-inning single up the middle as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cardinals 6-4 on Saturday night. Bianchi made his second start since coming off the disabled list on May 2 due to bursitis in his left hip.

The Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the 10th against Joe Kelly (0-2). Logan Schafer grounded into a fielder’s choice to a pulled-in Kozma, who threw home to force out Ryan Braun and set up Bianchi’s game-winner.

The Cardinals used four consecutive singles with two outs in the sixth inning to tie it 4-4. Matt Carpenter’s hit chased Milwaukee starter Marco Estrada and drove in Kozma who started the rally. Jon Jay’s single brought in Ty Wigginton. The Cards scored twice in the second but left the bases loaded. Kozma drove in Allen Craig, who walked to start the inning. Carpenter’s single gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
