Drury baseball eliminated from regionals

Top seed Ashland pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and then held off a Drury rally to defeat the second-seeded Panthers 3-2 in an NCAA-II Midwest Regional elimination game Friday afternoon at Meador Park in Springfield.  The Panthers (39-17) saw their season come to a close with their third consecutive loss.

In the ninth, the Panthers loaded the bases with two out after Spencer Wilmes reached on an error, Colton Jones singled and Nick Thimesch walked. But Zach Botjer, in picking up his sixth save, struck out Caleb Cole looking to end the game and put an end to the most productive season in Panther history. The 39 victories topped the previous school mark of 35 set in 2011 as Drury made just its second NCAA-II tourney appearance in the program’s seven-year history, and first time as host.

 

Mizzou baseball picks up series opening win over Kentucky

The Mizzou baseball team (17-30, 9-19) moved closer to earning a spot at the SEC Tournament after picking up a 4-2 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats at Taylor Stadium.  Keaton Steele, Logan Pearson, Shane Segovia and Dane Opel drove in runs.

Brett Graves picked up his second win of the season, allowing just three hits and one earned run over five innings of work, striking out three along the way. Relievers Jake Walsh and Steele finished off the game with four scoreless inning, finishing off a big win. Steele earned his first save of the season after pitching the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Missouri Southern loses pitcher’s duel in regionals

In an epic pitcher’s duel that saw two pitchers work more than 10 innings Minnesota State-Mankato defeated Missouri Southern 1-0 in the NCAA Division II Central Regional.  The Mavericks scored on a bunt single with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning.

For the Lions,  Brett Abell worked 11 strong innings, allowing just five hits and striking out 11 on the night. For the Mavericks Jason Hoppe worked 10.2 innings striking out seven and scattering seven hits.

Missouri Southern got to bed late and needs to turn around and face Central Missouri Friday at 12 p.m.

 

Central Missouri baseball drops regional opener

Central Missouri was held to just six hits as they fell 11-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional to St. Cloud State.  The Huskies put up three runs in the third inning to take an early lead. The Mules would battle back cutting the lead to one run by the seventh inning. SCSU would finished with eight runs over the final two innings to close out the victory.

For the Mules John Oropeza was one for four with a runs scored. Kevin Gratza also went one for four and added an RBI. Barrett Noirfalise was one for four and scored a run. Trevor Jones went two for four while Jon Cotter added a run driven in.

Central Missouri will play Friday at 12 p.m.

 

Missouri Western loses opening round game in D-II baseball regionals

The long ball cost Missouri Western as they gave up three against Southern Arkansas in a 6-1 loss to open the NCAA Central Regional.

The Muleriders jumped on top 2-0 on a David Harris home run in the bottom of the first inning. SAU would add another run in the fifth inning on a Jackson McCurdy home run. Missouri Western would get their first run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Nate Ramler. A Harris three-run home run in the eighth would give SAU the 6-1 lead.

For the Griffons Bubba Dotson went two for four and scored the lone run. Nate Ramler and Kyle Simpson also went two for four on the day as the Griffons stranded eight runners. Brandon Simmons threw all eight innings striking out two on the day.

The Griffons will face the winner of the Missouri Southern/Minnesota State-Mankato game Friday at 3:30 p.m. from Mankato, Minn.
