Mizzou softball selected to host a regional

The Missouri Tiger softball team will serve as one of 16 NCAA Regional hosts next weekend, announced Sunday evening by the NCAA Division I Softball Selection Committee. This marks the fourth straight year, and sixth year overall, that Mizzou has hosted the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Tigers take the No. 9 overall seed in the bracket and are the top seed in the Columbia Regional. Missouri took second in the Big 12 this season, finishing 17-7 in the league, and enter postseason play with a 43-12 overall mark. Also in the bracket are Massachusetts (38-11, 19-0 Atlantic-10), DePaul (35-20, 14-8 Big East) and Illinois State (35-21, 18-8 MVC). Mizzou will open play on Friday, May 18 against Illinois State, the No. 4 seed in the Regional.

Mizzou has won the NCAA Regional title each of the last four seasons and have won seven overall. Last year, the Tigers dropped game two to the Blue Demons, but rallied off three straight victories to move on to the Super Regional round, and eventually the Women’s College World Series.

Missouri sweeps Missouri State in baseball series

After facing an early four-run deficit, Missouri scored 10 of the final 11 runs of the night to cruise to a 10-5 victory over the Missouri State Bears Wednesday evening at Simmons Field in Columbia. The Tigers sweep a two-game season series from the Bears for the first time since 2000.

Conner Mach and Dane Opel provided much of the offense for the Tigers, combining to go 7-for-8 with six runs scored and five runs batted-in. Opel kicked off MU’s scoring charge with a two-run homer in the fourth, while Mach’s second double of the game ignited a three-run seventh inning rally that snapped a 5-5 tie.

Missouri (26-22), which topped the Bears (34-15) in 11 innings in the two clubs’ first meeting of the season on April 25, scored all three of its runs in the seventh with two men out to turn the tide for good. Scott Sommerfeld’s two-run double to center was the key blow, and Eric Garcia scored the third run with a base hit to right.

The Tigers would ice the game in the eighth, with Mach and Opel adding a sac fly and an RBI single, to help stop the Bears’ four-game win streak.

Tiger football gets pledge from in-state lineman

Missouri football picked up its 11th player for 2013 when lineman Antar Thompson from Maplewood Richmond Heights gave a verbal commitment on Saturday, as reported by the Columbia Daily Tribune. Thompson plays both sides of the ball, but is projected to start on the defensive side at Mizzou. Thompson is 6’5, 295 pounds and has racked up 14 sacks in the last seasons. M-RH made it to the Class 2 semifinals last season.

Mizzou basketball adds final recruit

Missouri Tiger basketball used their final scholarship for 2012 on 6’4 guard Jordan Clarkson, who is transferring from Tulsa. Last season he average 16.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Clarkson will sit out this year and have two years of eligibility left. Several transfers will be at Mizzou including former UConn center Alex Oriakhi, Pepperdine guard Keion Bell, Auburn swingman Earnest Ross and Oregon swingman Jabari Brown.

“We’re very pleased to have Jordan join our program,” said head coach Frank Haith.  “Jordan is a combo guard with a wide variety of skills, someone who can do a lot of things for you.  He’s a point guard with tremendous scoring ability, and having him is crucial to helping us achieve balance in our classes.  He’ll benefit from being in the program for a year before he gets out there, and I know he’ll take every advantage of the next year to be ready to go when it’s his time.  He’s a high-quality kid who will fit very well with our culture at Mizzou, and Tiger fans will enjoy having him represent the program.”
