Republican Senate leaders vow to fully fund education

State Senate leaders are vowing to maintain full funding for Missouri’s public schools, despite Governor Jay Nixon’s budget proposals that leave the education Foundation Formula approximately $87 million short of its stated goal.

Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields (R-St. Joseph) and Senate Majority Floor Leader Kevin Engler (R-Farmington) made it clear to reporters, during their weekly question and answer session following the Monday Senate session, that they intend to send Governor Nixon a 2011 fiscal year budget that includes full funding for the fifth year phase-in of the formula that the General Assembly agreed to. Income tax filing time draws near

Many Missourians have started receiving documents needed to file 2009 income tax returns. And, the Internal Revenue Service is urging taxpayers to begin getting their papers in order.

“Whether you’re an individual taxpayer or a business owner or self employed the easiest way to avoid headaches at tax time is to have good records,” said Michael Devine, St. Louis-based IRS Media Specialist for Missouri and Kansas. “They’re going to help you remember what you did last year, what you can deduct, and what business expenses you may have had that you can write off.” [Read more...]

Four Missouri businesses crack Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work for” list

Four Missouri companies make Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work for in 2010 list. Leading the Missouri businesses is the Edward Jones investment firm, which comes in at number 2. Scottrade brokerage house is number 27, Monsanto ranks 59th on the list, and Build-A-Bear Workshop checks in at number 80. All are based in St. Louis.

Jim Weddle, Managing Partner of Edward Jones, says one of the reasons his company makes the list is that many of the people working for Edward Jones own a piece of the company. [Read more...]

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder delivers response to State of State Address

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder has responded to Governor Jay Nixon’s State of the State Address, criticizing Nixon for calling for new programs and for attempting to fund those programs with money Kinder says Missouri does not have.

“Just like Washington politicians, Governor Nixon called for several new government programs but each of these programs will cost money – money that we do not have,” said Kinder to an audience of invited guests and reporters in the House Lounge. “Now is not the time for ideas to grow the size of government.
