Royals blank the Yanks

Following up on his six innings of four-hit ball on May 5 against the Yankees, Royals starter Felipe Paulino allowed no runs on six hits and two walks in 6.2 innings, while striking out eight as he pitched consecutive starts to shut out New York both times as the Royals won 6-0 on Monday night.

St. Louis kid beats Cardinals with pinch hit homer

Scott Van Slyke grew up in St. Louis cheering for the Cardinals and going to games with friends in high school. On Sunday night, the kid hit his first major league home run against the Cardinals who were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers, losing 6-5 Sunday night.

Van Slyke’s homer came against Mark Rzepczynski in the seventh with the Cardinals holding a 5-3 lead. With two runners on, Van Slyke was given the green light on 3-0 and cleared the bases. Van Slyke called it special coming against his hometown team.

The Cardinals were down 2-0 in the fifth when they finally got to starter Chad Billingsley.

Daniel Descalso led off with a single and Rafael Furcal reached on an error by Billingsley. Skip Schumaker followed with a two-run triple, then scored the go-ahead run when Carlos Beltran beat the relay to first from shortstop Justin Sellers on a potential inning-ending double-play. Furcal added a two-run bloop single that made it 5-2 in the sixth.

Rookie Matt Adams was added to the roster after the club put Lance Berkman on the 15 day DL with a sore knee. Adams lined the first pitch he saw in the major leagues for a base hit. He finished with two hits on the night.

Rookie shuts down Royals

Wade Miley pitched seven innings for Arizona and scored one of their runs on a bunt single in the first as the Diamondbacks beat the Royals 2-0.  Miley is now 5-1 after holding the Royals to five hits while walking two and striking out three. It was the Royals 17th loss in 22 home games this season.

Jeff Francoeur had four of Kansas City’s seven hits to match his career high. It was Francoeur’s first four-hit game since last Aug. 23 at Toronto.

Former Cardinals pitcher calls out Cleveland fans

Former Cardinals pitcher Chris Perez, now one of the Cleveland Indians leaders and closer, ragged on fans in Cleveland for their lack of support and booing the home team.

His comments came after a recent save in which he was booed for allowing a couple of batters on base before ending the game. The Indians have only one sellout this season…Opening Day.

In an article on ESPN.com, Perez said, “The fans are going to come, I know that,” Perez said. “It’s just a slap in the face when you’re in first place and last in attendance. Last. Not 25th or 26th. Last.”

Perez also objected to the hometown fans booing Indians players saying that was one of the reasons they can’t get big free agents. At the same time, he mentioned the loyal fan base of Cardinals nation. “Nobody wants to play in front of 5,000 fans. You had a choice of playing in St. Louis where you get 40,000 like (Carlos) Beltran chose to do, or you can come to Cleveland.”
