Northwest Missouri U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver of Kansas City told MSNBC that Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s attempt to soften his position on immigration won’t work.

“He (Trump) already has worse on the record of how he feels about immigrants, about Muslims, about African-Americans,” said Clever. “We’re saying people should pivot, in order words, what they said in the primary wasn’t the truth and they were lying. So now, they are telling the truth. Now, I love black people. I love Mexicans. I love immigrants. I just think it’s so silly that most Americans are going to be turned off.”

Trump’s campaign has included a proposal that would build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but Trump is now saying that he’d work with tax-paying individuals who don’t have legal immigration status.

“I think that he can do all of this so-called pivoting or lying or whatever you want to call it and it’s simply not going to work. We’re not crazy people,” said Clever.
