Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter left Wednesday night’s game against the Pirates in the third inning after injuring his right side while trying to check his swing.

Manager Mike Matheny and athletic trainer Adam Olsen met with Carpenter near the batter’s box before pulling him from the game.

Carpenter was diagnosed with a right oblique injury and left the ballpark for further tests.  An MRI was taken and the team will wait to see just how long they expect Carpenter to miss.

The injury is almost certain to land Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list. What the Cardinals will learn over the next several hours is for how long.

“I have a high level of concern,” said manager Mike Matheny. “I’ve seen it. It can be tough, but we’re not going to make conclusions until we hear from people who know what they’re talking about.”

Carpenter was selected as the Cardinals lone All-Star representative.  His injury comes on the heels of catcher Brayan Pena being put on the DL for a knee injury, earlier in the day.
