Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday homered to back Adam Wainwright, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals will send Michael Wacha to the mound on Wednesday to go for the sweep.

Carpenter and Holliday hit two mistakes from Jason Hammel (7-3) in a three-run third inning that made it 4-1. Wainwright (6-4) pitched into the seventh and was pulled for Jonathan Broxton having only thrown 97 pitches with two outs and the tying run on third.

Broxton was bailed out after a two-out walk, when Brandon Moss made a backhand stop on a smash by Jason Heyward to end the inning.

Kevin Siegrist worked a quiet eighth, and Trevor Rosenthal finished the ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances, but not without a scare.  He gave up a one-out single to Addison Russell and walked Javier Baez with two outs before pinch-hitter Matt Szczur grounded to Aledmys Diaz for a force play to end the game.
