Joey Votto hit a walk-off home run for a 7-6 Reds win at Great American Ballpark on Tuesday night in Cincinnati.

The Cardinals rallied from a 6-1 deficit and tied it with two runs in the ninth.  An overturned play at third called Matt Carpenter out, who represented the go-ahead run.  A call Carpenter didn’t agree with.

“Usually you don’t see plays like that overturned when you’re seeing it on the field and it doesn’t look like there’s any evidence of it. The call on the field usually stands,” Carpenter said.

Bad call or not, the fact is the Cardinals put themselves in a bad situation.

Mike Leake got roughed up in the fourth and hit hard again in the seventh. He was tagged for four in the fourth thanks in part to a three-run homer from Adam Duvall.

Duvall was the player the Reds received when they traded Leake last season

In the seventh, Leake allowed  a Billy Hamilton solo homer, then a double and single to end Leake’s night down 6-1.

Tony Cingrani got Matt Adams to fly out to end the eighth after the Cardinals took advantage of a leadoff walk and two errors by Brandon Phillips.

The Cardinals got to Cingrani in the ninth to tie the game on Carpenter’s two-run double.  The overturn at third ended the rally.

In his first game back Jhonny Peralta doubled twice including one in the eighth that drove in two.  He finished two-for-four with two doubles and two RBIs.
