With one week left in the legislative session, a so-called personhood amendment is headed to the state Senate but Majority Floor Leader Mike Kehoe (R-Jefferson City) is unclear if Republicans in his chamber will make it a priority.

“We’ll have a conversation about that. It’s just now come over from the House,” said Kehoe.

The proposal would ask voters if the state constitution should be amended to recognize unborn babies at every stage of development as human beings.

“Personally and I think our caucus is very passionate about protecting life, especially innocent life,” said Kehoe.

He is also wouldn’t say if he thinks a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) proposal will pass this session.

“Even there’s some people against some things, you’ve got to give some folks some time to talk about it. I’m sure we’ll talk about it at some point in time,” said Kehoe.

Two prescription drug monitoring proposals have been offered this session. One would allow doctors and pharmacists to check how many prescriptions people are having filled, to look for cases of abuse. The other would ask voters if such a program should be required.
