An overturned call on a base steal attempt gave Washington new life in the fourth inning and Danny Espinoza made Mike Leake pay for it.  Espinoza’s two-run homer in the fourth capped a four-run inning and led the Nationals to a 5-4 win over the Cardinals, Friday night at Busch Stadium.

Anthony Rendon was called out trying to steal second, but instead of it being two outs, Rendon was safe and scored the tying run on an RBI single by Daniel Murphy.  Two batters later after a sacrifice fly put Washington up 3-2, Espinoza homered with two strikes.  Leake tried to pick on the outside part of the plate, but he left one up and over and mistakes usually get hit out.

Leake also gave up a leadoff homer to Michael Taylor to start the game, snapping a 22-inning scoreless slump for the Nationals who were swept by Philadelphia the series before.

Leake is now 0-3 in five starts and has given up 19 earned runs in 29.1 innings.
