Sixteen University of Missouri students in Brussels, Belgium are safe after a series of deadly terrorist attacks Tuesday against the city’s airport and subway systems. Some of the Mizzou students were near the site of the explosion at the transit station. Christian Basi with the MU News Bureau said the journalism students are in Brussels interning at different area media outlets.

“Our thoughts and our prayers go out to the families of the victims. This is a horrible tragedy. We are very fortunate that all 16 of our students are safe and accounted for,” said Basi.
At least one faculty member is with the group.
“We haven’t made any immediate decisions as far as continuing the program or having the students come home. The faculty over there along with officials here will assess the situation, they’ll be in touch with local authorities there and we’ll also be in touch with the state department here to make a decision that is in the best safety interests of the students, faculty and the program,” said Basi.
At least 34 people have been confirmed dead with the death toll rising. More than 130 people were injured in the attacks.
A suicide bomber was responsible for at least one of the explosions.
All flights to and from Brussels Airport have been cancelled for the day, and flights have been diverted. Subway, train, tram and bus travel has also been shut down.
The attacks come four days after one of the suspects in November’s fatal Paris terrorist attacks was apprehended in Brussels.
