The bees are back!!!

The bees are back!!!

For the second year in a row, a swarm of bees hovered around the Royals dugout and near home plate.  This time there was no extermination. The bees were saved thanks to manager Ned Yost and a Royals fan…who just happened to be a retired beekeeper.

During the first two innings of Tuesday’s game between the Royals and Rockies at Surprise Stadium, bees were buzzing around the screen near home plate then settled onto a ball bag.

“I told [Mike Swanson, the Royals’ vice president of communications and broadcasting] we ain’t killing those bees and we better figure something out,” Yost said. “There are not enough bees in the world, boys. We cannot be exterminating them.”

Yost talks more about the bee situation.

Lowell Hutchinson, a retired beekeeper visiting from St. Joseph, Mo., stepped on the field and gathered the ball bag into trash bag and carried them off the field, where they were then released….and the crowd went wild.

Last March, a large swarm of bees gathered on a microphone behind home plate during a game between the Royals and Angels at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Those bees were exterminated.
