Politicians in both parties and at multiple levels of government are responding with words of encouragement and support to Senator Claire McCaskill (D), after her announcement that she is fighting breast cancer.

McCaskill announced the diagnosis on social media Monday afternoon, and said she expects to make a full recovery.

Her fellow Missouri Senator, Roy Blunt (R), said on Twitter, “[Claire McCaskill] & I work together every day, and I certainly wish her & her family the very best as she deals with this difficult diagnosis. I will step in any way I can to help while [she] seeks treatment, and hope she makes a speedy recovery.”

Both Democratic candidates for president also made statements.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “If ever cancer picked the wrong person to mess with, it’s you. Stay strong and take care of yourself. I’m in your corner. -H”

Clinton’s opponent, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, said, “Thoughts & prayers are with [Claire McCaskill]. Here’s to a full + speedy recovery!”

Some of Missouri’s candidates for governor have added comments.

The lone Democrat in that race, Chris Koster, said, “[Senator McCaskill] is one of the toughest fighters in the State of Missouri. I know she’ll beat this too.”

One of the Republicans vying for the chance to challenge Koster, businessman and former Marine John Brunner, said, “[Senator McCaskill] and her family are in mine and Jan’s prayers as she fights breast cancer. Confident she’ll fight her way through this.”

Former Navy Seal Eric Greitens said, “Thoughts & prayers are with [Claire McCaskill]. Here’s to a full + speedy recovery!”

Former Missouri House Speaker and U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway, said on Twitter, “Will be praying for [Senator McCaskill] and a speedy recovery.”

Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, who is challenging Senator Blunt for his seat, said, “My thoughts and prayers are with Claire. This is another fight she’ll win.”

Two St. Louis-area members of Congress reacted. Congressman Lacy Clay (D) said, “Sending courage, strength and prayers to my good friend [Claire McCaskill] for a full and speedy recovery. #beatbreastcancer,” and Congresswoman Ann Wagner typed, “Praying for [Claire McCaskill]. Please send her prayers and words of encouragement for a quick, full recovery.”

Southwest Missouri Congressman Billy Long (R) said, “Sorry to hear of [Senator McCaskill’s] #breastcancer diagnosis 1 yr. to the day of our Daughter’s #NonHodgkinsLymphoma diagnosis pray it goes as well.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan also typed support. He said, “Janna’s & my thoughts are with [Senator McCaskill] during this trying time.”

Missouri Auditor Nicole Galloway said, “Prayers for a speedy recovery & good health for Senator [McCaskill].”

Missouri’s Republican Party said on Twitter, “Our prayers are with [Senator McCaskill] as she begins her fight against cancer,” and the Chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party, Roy Temple,” said “Best wishes to Senator [McCaskill] in her battle against breast cancer.”

Missouri State Representative Elijah Haahr (R-Springfield) added, “Pray for [Claire McCaskill].” Former Missouri Governor Matt Blunt (R) said, “Will be praying for [Claire McCaskill] and a speedy recovery.”

McCaskill, a former Jackson County Prosecutor, also received a message on Twitter from the Missouri Prosecutors Association: “We are thinking of our former colleague and MAPA past-president [Claire McCaskill]. Sending out our best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
