Hard to believe a hockey franchise as rich as the Montreal Canadiens, the NHL’s version of the New York Yankees, is still capable of setting records based on victories. Following their 3-0 win over the Blues on Tuesday night, the Canadiens are 7-0-0, topping their previous best start through seven games of six wins and one tie in 1961-62 and 1977-78.
Carey Price made a season-high 38 saves for his second shutout in three games and they beat Jake Allen with goals from captain Max Pacioretty, Alexander Semin and Torrey Mitchell.
“This is a well-coached, disciplined, play-the-game-the-right-way team; they’re going to be a bear all year for everybody,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said.
St. Louis fell to 5-2-0 but remains tied for the conference lead ending their four-game winning streak to complete their season-high six-game road trip that began after a season opening home win.
Blues right wing Vladimir Tarasenko’s point streak ended at six games, and he came into the game tied for the NHL lead with five goals and nine points. He was robbed in the first period after a beautiful feed from former Canadien Scott Gomez, but Price snatched his with his glove. The Blues outshot Montreal 17-10 in the first period and that advantage was nearly 2-to-1 in favor of the Blues late through the second, but they trailed 2-0.
