Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia was pitching a shutout into the ninth inning and came within two outs of throwing the first complete game of the season for the staff.  He gave way to closer Trevor Rosenthal after allowing six singles, one walk and six strike outs.   Miami scored a run in the ninth, but the Redbirds finished off a 3-1 victory.

Matt Carpenter used small and long ball to help carry the offense.  Carpenter’s bunt single broke a scoreless tie in the fifth. He hit a solo home run in the eighth.

Garcia had a 3-0 lead into the ninth and struck out Martin Prado, but then hit Derek Dietrich and walked Casey McGehee, bringing Rosenthal from the bullpen.  The Marlins scored an unearned run when Cole Gilliespie singled and right fielder Jason Heyward mishandled the ball for an error, allowing Dietrich to score, but Rosenthal picked up his 35th save in 38 chances.
