Melky Cabrera hit a go-ahead solo homer in the sixth inning, Tyler Flowers added a two-run shot in a five-run ninth, and the Chicago White Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 on Wednesday.
Despite enduring three rain relays, both starters pitched at least six quality innings. Chicago’s Jose Quintana (4-7) struck out eight over six frames and allowed just one run on six hits, while John Lackey (6-5) was charged with two runs on seven hits over as many innings.
Chicago took both games of the quick series but had to wait out the rain. The first pitch was delayed over two hours, and after Lackey tossed a 1-2-3 inning, the tarp was back on the field before Quintana was done warming up.
Play stopped for 14 minutes, and when it resumed, Kolten Wong singled and scored from first on Jhonny Peralta’s double into the left-field corner.
Flowers, whose homer in the 11th inning gave the White Sox the win on Tuesday, singled to lead off the fifth and came around on Adam Eaton’s humpback liner to center.
Lackey was ahead 1-2 on Cabrera in the sixth, but Cabrera smacked a low pitch into the bullpen beyond the wall in right-center for his third home run of the year.
Seth Maness coughed up Flowers’ two-run shot in the ninth, and the White Sox tacked on three more runs on Jose Abreu’s RBI single, Cabrera’s run-scoring groundout and an error on Matt Carpenter during a rundown.
