Eric Campbell scores the winning run in the 14th inning for the Mets.

Matt Harvey pitched eight scoreless innings for the New York Mets, but in the ninth inning, Jason Heyward’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1 off Mets closer Jeurys Familia.  Nearly two hours later, pinch-hitter John Mayberry Jr., grounded an RBI single scoring the winning run for a 2-1 Mets victory over the Cardinals.

Recently recalled Sam Tuivailala (0-1) walked Eric Campbell and Lucas Duda to open the 14th. Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal came in and got Michael Cuddyer to ground into a fielder’s choice. Rosenthal intentionally walked Daniel Murphy to load the bases and Mayberry hit the first pitch to Jhonny Peralta, who made a diving stop, but his throw home was late and off the mark, allowing the winning run to score.

Mayberry, who entered batting .114, grounded the first pitch to diving drawn-in shortstop Jhonny Peralta, who got his glove on the ball. Campbell slid home ahead of a late throw that stretching catcher Yadier Molina could not reach.

John Lackey pitched great, going seven innings allowing one run on three hits.  That lone run came in the fourth.  “John Lackey was good as any pitcher can be,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t get anything going offensively.”
