The Cardinals got the news we all expected after seeing the injury on Saturday.  Their ace, Adam Wainwright, is done for the rest of the season.

General manager John Mozeliak confirmed on Monday that Adam Wainwright has a torn left Achilles and will likely miss 9-12 months.
The official season-ending diagnosis came after Wainwright had an MRI on his ankle in St. Louis on Monday.

Mozeliak wasn’t ready to say a deal is imminent for a replacement outside of the organization.

Marco Gonzales, in the running for a starting job at the end of spring training,  is dealing with tightness in his left pectoral muscle and he’s out for at least a week. Jaime Garcia threw less than 50 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday, and he’s at least four weeks away.

Tim Cooney and Tyler Lyons, both currently pitching in the Triple-A rotation, could be available for Wainwright’s slot on Thursday.

John Lackey, Lance Lynn, Michael Wacha and Carlos Martinez have helped lead the Cardinals to a Major League-best 1.97 ERA.
