K.J. Robinson (5) and Brandon Kilgore (12) look on as Kevin Puryear attempts a free throw.

For the second time on this finals weekend with the boys, a team’s leading scorer fouled out in the fourth quarter, but unlike the Class 4 final, Blues Springs South held onto their lead.

Brandon Kilgore was the third leading scorer on Blue Springs South this season, but during the finals on Saturday night against Park Hills South, he led the way. The 6’1 senior scored 23 as the Jaguars won 71-57 over the Panthers to claim the Boys Class 5 championship at Mizzou Arena.

While future Missouri Tiger Kevin Puryear was held quiet in the first half, as Park Hills South focused a lot of their defensive attention on the 6’7 senior, Kilgore and K.J. Robinson stepped up. Robinson, who finished with 15, scored the Jags first eight points of the game as Blue Springs South jumped out to a 10-0 lead.

Park Hills South fought back to make it a 30-25 game at the break, but let Blue Springs South get on a roll in the third as they fell behind 45-33 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Kilgore was assessed a technical foul on a battle for a loose ball near center court with 4:26 to play. The Panthers were awarded four free throws and the ball. The Jaguars led by 11, but the Panthers made four free throws to cut the score to 57-50 and on the ensuing possession, James Byrd hit a jumper to close to within five with under four to play.

Up by 11 with 2:03 to play, Puryear fouled out when he was called for flailing elbows after a defense rebound, but the Jags maintained the lead.

Park Hills South’s Byrd finished with a game high 26 points as the Panthers finished 26-4.
