The St. Louis Blues, already without a couple of key players lost All-Star defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk in the early minutes of the game and then captain David Backes got ejected, yet the Blues managed to win their fifth straight victory with a 4-3 win at Verizon Center in a Sunday matinee.

Despite two goals from Washington’s caption, Alex Ovechkin, the Blues were able to rally getting two goals from Alexander Steen, and Dmitrij Jaskin and Vladimir Tarasenko each scored for St. Louis (32-13-4), which has won 10 of 11. T.J. Oshie had three assists and goaltender Brian Elliot made 33 saves.

Ovechkin’s two gave him an NHL-leading 31 goals this season. He became the fifth player in League history to score at least 30 in each of his first 10 seasons, joining a group that includes Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Mike Bossy and Mike Gartner.

Shattenkirk collided with Ovechkin and slid into the boards. He left for the locker room with 15:27 remaining in the first. Hitchcock did not have an update after the game.  Backes took a boarding penalty on Karl Alzner at 5:25 of the second period, but the Capitals were unable to score.
