Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson struggled with Michael Brown in his police SUV before fatally shooting Brown, according to an account in the New York Times.

The Times cites “unnamed government officials connected to the civil rights investigation,” who say Wilson says he feared for his life and was pinned in the SUV during the struggle for his gun. They say the gun was fired twice while in the car, with one shot hitting Brown in the arm.

Wilson reportedly said Brown punched and scratched him repeatedly.

The unnamed sources reportedly say evidence so far does not support civil rights charges against Wilson.

An attorney for Brown’s family says the account still doesn’t explain why Wilson shot Brown after getting out of the SUV.
