Kolten Wong led off the ninth inning with a home run off Sergio Romo to give the Cardinals a 5-4 win and even the National League Championship Series at 1-1.
Matt Carpenter hit the first of the four Redbird homers in the bottom of the third off Jake Peavy. In the fourth, Randal Grichuk singled home Matt Adams to put St. Louis up 2-0.
San Francisco scored single runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings off Lance Lynn (5.2 innings, 2 ER) and Randy Choate to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Oscar Tavares homered off Jean Machi to tie the game, and Adams was in line to be the hero once again when his solo shot put the Cardinals up in the eighth off Hunter Strickland.
This amazing trend continues for Missouri teams that were ranked at the bottom of major league baseball for homers. St. Louis, last in the NL with 105 home runs during the regular season, has hit 11 homers in six playoff games — seven in the seventh inning or later.
In the ninth inning, Trevor Rosenthal got himself into trouble once again and uncorked a wild pitch allowing he tying run to score in the ninth.
