Monday night it was Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams who supplied the offense with six RBIs.  Tuesday night, it was Colorado first baseman Justin Morneau’s turn.  Morneau hit a three-run homer and drove in six runs as the Colorado Rockies beat the Cardinals 10-5 snapping a seven-game losing streak.  Morneau had an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the seventh.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals and made a beautiful play behind second base to save a run in the fifth and Matt Holliday continued his hot hitting at his former home in Coors Field, going 2 for 5. He is hitting .545 in his last five games at this park.  Down 8-5 in the eighth inning, the Cardinals rallied and had the bases loaded, but Adam Ottavino, a former first round draft pick of the Cardinals, struck out pinch hitter Jon Jay.

Perhaps there are more issues with the starting pitching which already has Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia on the DL.  Shelby Miller had to exit with two outs in the third inning after hurting his back on a pitch to Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa.  He was noticeably in discomfort after a pitcher and manager Mike Matheny and  a team trainer went out to talk to Miller.  He threw a few warm up pitches, but had to leave the game.  Nick Greenwood came on in relief.

Both Miller and Greenwood were charged with three runs each.  Down 6-5 heading into the late innings, the bullpen faltered as Sam Freeman gave up two runs in an inning’s worth of work and Jason Motte was charged with two runs on three hits as he was unable to finish the eighth inning.

For Motte, it was just the fourth time in 13 appearances this season he has allowed a run, and just the first time he’s given up more than one in an inning.
