Adam Wainwright was brilliant again tossing seven shutout innings and the bullpen closed it down for a 1-0 Cardinals win over the Tampa Bay Rays. It was the Cardinals third straight shutout over an opponent after the Redbirds shutout Toronto 5-0 on back to back days over the weekend.

Matt Holliday, able to use the off day to rest up a sore back, scored the only run when he hit a solo homer in the sixth. It was his fourth of the year and one of just three Cardinals hits on the night.

Wainwright became the National League’s first nine-game winner. It’s the seventh start this year that Wainwright has not allowed a run.   Wainwright scattered seven hits.  Trevor Rosenthal got the final four outs, including a bases-loaded pop up to get Matt Joyce out in the eighth, for his 17th save.

The Cardinals are 34-31, four games behind Milwaukee.
