“I’ve had some times in my career where I felt like I had the stuff to do it,” Adm Wainwright said, referring to throwing a no-hitter. “Today I had the stuff to do it.”

Wainwright threw a one-hitter, facing 28 batters and striking out nine as the Cardinals open their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-0 win, Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.

The lone hit off Wainwright came in the top of the fourth inning when Paul Goldschmidt hit a 2-2 pitch off the wall for a double.  Prior to that, Wainwright opened the game retiring the first 11 batters he faced.

The power was also turned back on for the Cardinals.  Matt Adams hit a two-run homer in the first and Jhonny Peralta later added his team leading ninth homer of the season in the sixth.  He also doubled in a run in the fourth.

The Cardinals cooled off D-backs starter Bronson Arroyo.  He had been 3-0 with an 0.39 ERA in May and hadn’t allowed a homer his last four starts. Arroyo gave up five runs in seven innings, all of the runs coming with two outs.
