The Chicago Cubs just finished a three-game in Atlanta in which they scored a total of four runs. They’ve only scored 15 total runs for their ace pitcher Jeff Samardzija all season. Yet they managed to muster up 17 runs on 20 hits against the Cardinals in a 17-5 blowout. Infielder Daniel Descalso was brought in to get the last out in the ninth.

Junior Lake drove in a career-high six runs, and rookie Mike Olt belted a two-run homer, his eighth to lead all rookies. Former Royal Emilio Bonafacio scored five runs becoming the first Cub player to do that since 1987.

Tyler Lyons started and gave up nine runs in four innings. It was the first time a Cardinals starter had given up more than six runs in a game this season. Eric Fornataro gave up two runs in two innings and things settled down until the ninth.

Randy Choate gave up five singles and two doubles allowing six runs to score before Descalso was brought in to get a fly ball out from Olt in the ninth.
