Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Khris Davis tripled in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Central Division leaders a 5-3 win over the Cardinals on Monday night at Busch Stadium. The win increases Milwaukee’s lead to 5.5 games over the Cardinals in the first month of the season.
Davis drove in Jonathan Lucroy, who doubled off Seth Maness (0-2) to start the inning. Mark Reynolds scored Davis whose triple was his only hit on the night, finishing 1-for-6, with strikeouts in the second, fifth, sixth and 10th innings.
Matt Holliday drove in two runs, putting the Cardinals on top 1-0 in the first on a single to center scoring Matt Carpenter off Milwaukee starter Yovanni Gallardo. Holliday led off the sixth with his second homer of the year to make it 2-0 and then Allen Craig hit his second with two outs to make it a 3-0 lead. Â Gallardo was 1-11 against the Cardinals entering the game and was on his way to loss No. 12.
Michael Wacha was cruising into the seventh when he struck out Reynolds for his ninth K of the game, but then the wheels came off. Wacha allowed two runs on four straight singles and was lifted for Pat Neshek who hit Aramis Ramirez with two outs and the bases loaded to bring in the tying run.
Lance Lynn will start Tuesday’s game. Â If he wins, he will tie Babe Ruth with the best winning percentage in the first month of the season with a minimum of 10 starts.
