Left handed pitcher Tyler Lyons, just called up from Triple-A Memphis in the absence of injured Joe Kelly, went six innings in the opener of a four-game series on Monday against the Mets, but lost 2-0. Kelly will miss at least two more starts with a hamstring injury.

While Lyons pitched well, he hit a batter in the third, committed a throwing error in the sixth, and both runners scored on RBI singles, being the difference in this game.

The Cardinal bats went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and left seven men stranded against Jenrry Mejia and three Mets relievers.

In the seventh, the Cards drew a pair of two out walks, but Shane Robinson tapped out to third. Allen Craig doubled with one out in the eighth, but Matt Holliday and Matt Adams were struck out by Mets reliever Carlos Torres. Yadier Molina singled to start the ninth off closer Kyle Farnsworth, but a double play ended the promising beginning.
