Overland, Missouri native Steve Cash is the goaltender for the Team USA Paralympic Sled Hockey Team. In the semifinals at Shayba Arena in Sochi, Russia, he stopped all 11 shots as the U.S. beat Canada 3-0 to advance to the gold medal game against Russian on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
Ten of his 11 saves came in the first half of the game and the U.S. clamped down on defense after getting two goals from Declan Farmer in the final six minutes of the first period.
The U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team (3-0-0-1) will be playing for its second straight Paralympic gold medal. No team has won back-to-back gold medals in Paralympic sled hockey.
Cash, who lives in St. Louis now, was diagnosed with osterosarcoma (bone cancer) of the right knee in October 1992 and underwent amputation surgery at the age of three. He’s been a member of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team since 2005. He has played in 93 career games and has 24 shutouts.
