The Cardinals will not comment publicly until left handed pitcher Jaime Garcia seeks his second opinion on his sore shoulder. Garcia went in for an exam with with team physician George Paletta earlier in the week. Now he will pay a visit to orthopedist Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on Wednesday.

General manager John Mozeliak was given an update by Paletta about the results, but will not share any details. However Mozeliak says early indications are encouraging.

Garcia has been a frequent patient of Andrews. He visited him twice for shoulder discomfort. In October 2012, Andrews suggested that Garcia address the issue with a rest and rehab program. The following May, Andrews recommended surgery to repair a tear to the rotator cuff and labrum, ending Garcia’s season.

When Garcia showed up in Jupiter, he said his rehab work went well, and Garcia came into Spring Training feeling fine. After three bullpen sessions, his shoulder was sore.

At this point, it appears that Garcia will miss the season opener. The question is how long will he be gone? That will be determined by today’s visit with Dr Andrews.
